Organizations identifying potential enriched employees and training them to reach the top, and most importantly sustain there.
The appraisal season is over: Evaluating performances, increments and promotions are no longer the only objectives of the appraisal process as far as India Inc is concerned. Few founders of the learning schools that offers a range of programmers and workshops on leadership training believes in “Identifying future leaders and training them for top management positions seems to be a pronounced mandate for the appraisal system”.
The Organisations have always been facing many consequences in identifying the potential leaders. So how are such leaders identified? “The spark, the realm of knowledge, the ambitions and the guts to act in times of uncertainty are all characteristics of a high-potential employee,” So this way the next generation leaders can be identified easily.
Keeping in view the business uncertainties that the organizations are facing today, the leadership training programs are tailored keeping these critical challenges in mind in such a way that the glory does not fade out for people when they acquire top management positions. “The bigger challenge is to retain that position, effectively manage change in the backdrop of myriad complexities”.
Talking about the topics which are addressed within such programmes, “Effective decision –making, managing change in complex times and managing and motivating people from diverse backgrounds and cultures are some macro topics. In addition, people are also trained cross-cultural business etiquette, soft skills and technology.”
It is well said by someone, “As a first step towards a designing structured leadership training programme, an organization should define the set of skills and characteristics that it needs in its leadership team”. An ideal training programme is one which emphasizes on self-awareness and responsibility as it is imperative for a leader to be aware of his/her shortcomings, qualities and style.
These training initiatives are beneficial for both organizations and employees. “Since effective leaders help increase the value of an organization and its brand, leadership development programmes are an investment well made as far as organizations are concerned. These programmes also facilitate overall career growth and learning for employees”.
So, is there anything new that is trending in the field of leadership training? “Managing different stakeholders such as owners, investors and clients on one hand and motivating their aspirations on the other has become very important for leaders in these tough and challenging times.
Training programmes are, therefore, being developed to enable leaders to enhance their capabilities around these things,” says Perez. The challenges?
“Organisations generally focus on the development of new skills, abilities and behaviors as far as leadership development programmes are concerned. However, most organizations ignore the process of growing or developing ‘big minds’. This is a critical aspect that leadership development training programmes need to incorporate,” says Kapur.
It is important that only qualified trainers conduct leadership development programmes. They need to have an exceptional command over the subject matter.
“It is beneficial for the employees as well as the organization to have an in-house expert on a specific subject. However, there might be some topics on which an organization would want an industry expert from outside,” says Kapur.
Leadership development programmes are also offered by the leading management training institutes of our country such as the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), XLRI and NMIMS (Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies).
